fever!

It has taken alot longer this year to get the fever I usually get just after July the 4th every year. I don't know what is wrong, maybe my body is changing or maybe our Oklahoma climate is changing.

This week is the first time this year I have felt the effects of this fever I always get. I remember the first time it effected me. It was in 1972, I was 12 years old and have come down with this every year since then... 33 years to be exact. So please don't get near me if you don't want to catch this. If you get near me you may be infected for life or you may get deathly sick of it for a moment. I don't know the medical term for this but I do know the remedy. My first relief and freedom comes when I see those Boomer Sooners play their first game. Come on fever!

Comments:
Kris I hear that being washed in a Crimson Tide can cure that fever! ;-D

Kris,

Sooner born, sooner bred, eh. I'm sorry. :-) Couldn't help but come to your place after reading your stuff at ER's place.

Me, I'm more of an OU despiser -- can't stand 'em, nor most of their fans. Won't lump you in with that classification just yet, but bandwaggoners drive me batty. Six years ago when I moved to Oklahoma, the Sooners weren't so dadgum hot on the football field. You could walk into any business or mall and see KU, OSU, Penn State, Texas stuff as much as you saw OU stuff. A year or two later, you couldn't fling a dead cat without hitting a supposed OU fan.

Most of those fans couldn't identify Sherry Coale or Kelvin Sampson, but they considered themselves "diehards."

I actually have friends that are OU fans. They just aren't bandwaggoners I just described. They're actually OU graduates, so I can support them.

God bless you, and enjoy your blog.

Hey I was just kidding! (grin) Hope all is well brother.

hey kc,
I have been out since Friday. I know you were just kidding. I'm not so sure how to take the other comment though. I guess I will just disregard it as ignorance, because of only being in OK for the last 6 years. "OU despiser" tells me that his observations at the best are suspect. God bless you to teditor.

Anyway I hope you and your family are making it through Katrina alright.

Thought I'd comment on this again: I wish it were ignorance. Unfortunately, it isn't. Worked in an area where we were inundated by "readers" who thought nothing of their lives other than OU football.

Grew up rooting for two schools -- Kansas State because my mom's a Kansan and uncles graduated from K-State; and Oklahoma because my dad's from Oklahoma and I loved the wishbone. Then as a sophomore in high school in Texarkana, Texas, our top player was being recruited by all the top schools in the country. I got to meet Barry Switzer and Lou Holtz and countless others because I, too, played football, and they were always around.

Jeff Pickett chose OU and started on the offensive line for the Sooners as a freshman in 1983.

Then in 1991, I moved to Oklahoma the first time. I saw just how incredibly pompous most OU fans were and became turned off by 'em very quickly. Reminded me of the Dallas Cowboys fans I ran into in Texas.

I left Oklahoma in 1993 and returned in 1999. By then, I was completely turned off the Sooners, 98 percent because of their fans. Most I ran into looked down upon fans of other teams, and that just wasn't cool.

I loved John Blake. Best thing that ever happened to the rest of us who don't care that much for crimson and cream. I knew right away that Bob Stoops would turn that program around, and it turned my stomach.

That being said, I love good football, and the Oklahoma Sooners are good football. What they did with Heupel at QB was incredible, and I think Adrian Peterson should've won the Heisman Trophy last year because he was the best player in college football.

Still don't care for most of their fans, though, which is why I root so hard against 'em.

As I said, I don't want to lump you into all that, mainly because I don't know you. But I thought I should, at the very least, explain myself.

And lest you think I'm a K-State bandwaggoner, I'll pass this along: I first actually attended a game at KSU Stadium in 1984 (I had just moved back to Kansas after leaving the state in 1972), and I fell in love with the atmosphere. It was K-State vs. Kansas. Neither team was worth a hoot, but the stadium was a blast.

I went back many times. Sat in a nearly vacant KSU Stadium in 1988, where there were 5,000 fans in the stands and most of 'em were wearing orange. I watched Barry Sanders run for more than 300 yards against the 'Cats -- that '88 team was as sorry as sorry gets. Worst team ever. Bill Snyder took over that next year.

But I wore purple that November day, just as I had the fall of 1984, just as I did in 1982, when K-State played in the Independence Bowl.

And, yes, last year was kind of tough on a Wildcats fan, but that's part of the territory.

Keep up the fun, Kris. Enjoy this season. I may hate OU, but I'll love watching Adrian Peterson run.

I agree with you about most of the OU "fans". Wether they are arrogant fans or "tempered" fans I still have to say they are not bandwaggoners. OU has a legacy of "great" football dating back to the late 40's, so when we do have down years it hurts but it doesnt' mean we jump to another team and back on the bandwagon when we are better, we just aren't as excited as fans. Besides every team has bad fans and the more fans you have the having more bad ones is inevitable. Our ratio may be a tad higher than most. I dont' necessarly defend bad apples, but you know what, they are my teams bad apples and being sort of kinsmen I won't dog em either.

Anyway good luck to the Wildcats and Jayhawks. I am enjoying this conversation though.

Hey Pastor thanks for stopping by.
I have a good friend, who is our salesman for Cat heavy equipment, and an aggie alumni. He is always saying "gig em". Football is alot of fun and even more fun when your team is on top of the college world. Looks like this year we "rebuild" instead of reloading. Which is really ok with me, I don't want to be the buffalo bills of the ncaa.

Of course we will most likely (85% chance) capture the state crown (bedlam) again this year against the school in stillwater.

You know what you do when an OSU graduate knocks on your door?.........................................................................You pay em for the pizza!
